Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park
Before complex life existed, the rocks were being formed. 2.5 billion years ago. Geology is best observed when the land has been stripped of most organic life, the desert allowing only the hardiest of flora to survive. This is Joshua Tree National Park. A landscape cracked by the tectonic faults, punctuated by the San Andreas fault running nearby. Arches and rounded boulders dot the panorama as the weathering has removed the angularity from the landscape.
Man has tried to survive by mining, but in the end it was a cycle of failed attempts to extract minerals from the monzogranite that left behind a few buildings and a stamping mill. It also left a quiet heat that seems to have scorched the earth with a sterile beauty. The Joshua Tree and cactus amongst this landscape is all that seems to remain. The colors intensified by what seems to be the black and white of the stone and shadows.
