Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Hundreds of feet above me, the waves are caressing the warm waters. As I swim towards sunlight, there are sponges and shell amongst the coral life surrounding me. Giant sharks and fish swim by. Eventually all dying, floating to the bottom to become part of the limestone basement. Chert forms as hard amorphous nodules buried between the layers. Coral reefs embedded with shells grow along the sides.
That was 300 million years ago, during the Permian. But it was truly the feeling one can image hiking the trails. Then climbing up the limestone trails to view the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape with the wind howling by as you let your mind wander into the past.
