Iceberg Point National Monument
Iceberg Point Lies at the Southern end of Lopez Island. Remnants of the last ice age abound, glacial erratics (the granite rocks carried down and deposited on top of the bedrock of greywacke (mudstones), the beautifully polished rounded surfaces flowing over the jagged cliffs plucked by the glaciers flowing south. The National Monument is not only classic for its endless views, teasing you into thinking you can see the Pacific Ocean, but you are just being able to peer down the Straits of San de Fuca, or South into the Puget Sound. Sitting in the middle of the Salish Sea, the weather swirls around you, calm blue skies followed by storms battering the cliffs. A landscape of forests leading to a bluff of windblown grasses.
