KEY LARGO Limestone Windley State Park 24.949170,-80.596110
The geology of the keys are interesting reflecting a time when sea levels were both higher and much lower. The carbonate made up of coral had to be below sea level and was estimated to be several hundred feet above at one point. Today Palmetto and Banyan trees surround the quarry, an anthropological remnant of excavated stone for the building of rail lines and building facades.
Geochronology ages from 95-± 9 to 145 ± 14 ka for coral from the Key largo Limestone. Coral from Windley Key quarry was used by Harmon et al. (1979) as part of the Uranium-Series lntercomparison Project. The mean age of the coral was 139 ka.
