Cealfian
Cealfin. To calve, to lose a portion of the iceberg or glacier. It is said that the Polar bear is innured to the sound of a gunshot. Living amongst the Glacial waters, with ice surrounding their very being, the booming seperation of a glacier yielding to gravity barely makes an impression on Ursus maritimus. To the Arctic adventurer, that sound is sudden, stopping our activity. With the camera lens we search for its source only to see the splash as the glaciers yield its prodigeny, calving a new chunk into the icy waters. But on occasion – as luck would have it, I was distracted by small chunks losing their grip on the face of the advancing ice. I was observing this phenomen, when the cliff gave way enabling me to capture the birth of a small ice berg in it’s entirety. The smooth waters displaced, formed a tsunami that lifted the surrounding pack ice ever so gently. And then the quiet returns.
